LinkedIn these days may be the social network that is used most by those looking for a new job (and not the place to read tweets), but the company has long wanted to be seen as the place for a whole lot more, and we’re now getting a glimpse of how it plans to put that into action. LinkedIn has been quietly rolling out a new version of its homepage to some of its 160 million+ users — the first major update in years — with a layout that will put a lot more emphasis on building out relationships, make better use of socially curated news content — and, if things go according to plan, should make the site a lot more sticky.
We’ve had three different people contact us about the new-look LinkedIn, and a spokesperson for the company has also confirmed as much:
“We are always looking for ways to make it easier for LinkedIn members to get more value out of our services by creating simpler, more relevant experiences, so we are currently testing a new design for the LinkedIn homepage with a handful of members,” he told TechCrunch.

Keeping Track of Your Web Site Passwords

Deutsch: Logo von OpenID
Deutsch: Logo von OpenID (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
I have a dirty secret to share with you all today: until recently, I didn't have a very good strategy for keeping track of my various Web site passwords and logins. Near my desk is a worn set of stapled sheets of paper with various notations about which username, email address, and password I have used to authenticate to its services. Luckily, I work alone, but still it bothers me that if someone were to break into my office, those special pieces of paper would probably be the most important thing to find. I know some of you use PostIt notes for this purpose, and keep them where no one would look, such as under your keyboards. There is a better way, and I will get to it in a moment, but first I want to take you through what some of the other solutions that I have tried and rejected. Since I do most of my work on my laptop, why not just automate the credentials inside my browser? That is good for some of the sites that I use most frequently, but it isn't very secure should someone get a hold of my laptop. Another idea is OpenID.net, which is an open-source collection of Web sites that federates your identity, including Yahoo, MySpace, Facebook, and others. OpenID sounds really good, until you start to peek under the covers, and realize that if a phisher ever got ahold of just one authentication of yours at one site, they could pretty much gain access to the rest of your OpenID sites. This is more 'phederated ID' and a hacker's paradise. The problem is that once you authenticate properly on one Web site, you can use your OpenID URL to gain access to anything else. I have mentioned in previous missives Ping.fm and Quub.com that attempt to consolidate all of your social networking logins in one place, and be able to update your status messages across the board. But it is troubling when I get emails from Quub mentioning that they have upgraded their system and "had to clear everyone's existing credentials that were encrypted with the old algorithm. Please re-enter your credentials under Settings ..." RoboForm is another solution, which basically automates the credentials and saves it in an encrypted spot on your hard drive. That is great, but what happens if you are using a different PC? Another way is to use some form of two-factor authentication, so called because it uses something that you - and only you - have on your possession, such as a special and unique SecurID token. I have one for my PayPal account, it cost $5 and is well worth the added protection that it offers. Basically, no one else can use my account unless they use the token to sign in. http://tinyurl.com/paypalkey But the issue with these tokens is that you need one for each of your accounts. There are some vendors who are trying to get around this issue by using one's cell phone as a second factor authentication tool including Phonefactor.com and FireID.com. Both require some integration of their tools into your applications, which isn't very good if you want to apply them universally to all of your Web authentications. FireID's solution involves using a special server that sits on my network, while PhoneFactor requires software agents to download to your desktop or to integrate into your Web applications. So what else can you do? The service that I am trying out now is from Tricipher and called MyOneLogin.com. It costs $30 a year per user, and everything is done via their hosted service so there is nothing to download, other than an optional Firefox or IE browser plug-in to handle some tasks. You set up a special Web portal for your company, and then add your credentials to the various sites. It comes with hundreds of pre-set applications and works with either special knowledge questions (what was the name of your third-grade teacher) or with your cell phone. The good thing about MyOneLogin is that you can set it up and forget your passwords, because no matter where you are you can login to the portal and then to your applications. You can mix and match Web and internal apps, such as your VPN login, too, without any programming or installing any servers. And it is also a great solution if a company wants to keep control of these credentials to these sites, so when you leave you can't take your logins with you. Look for one of my WebInformant.tv screencast video demos in the near future that will show you more about the service. And you can try it out for 30 days for free if you are interested. Maybe now I can finally toss those special pieces of paper - but first I will have to make sure to shred them! How to Use Pinterest to Promote Your Business

English: Red Pinterest logo
Image via Wikipedia
Social media changes on a regular basis and it can be difficult for small business owners to keep up. You've got a Facebook page? Check. Your twitter feed is regularly updated? Check. Well here's something else to keep you busy - Pinterest. The issue with technology changing so swiftly is that you do not always understand what horse to back. You may have wasted your dollars getting your MySpace site custom-designed, only to find all your potential customers have moved onto Facebook. So when you read about a fresh social media experience, you're right to pause and ask yourself, ought I be worrying with this? So, should you be bothering to use Pinterest? Pinterest (rhymes with interest) is an online virtual pinboard. Items which you stick on your pinboard or freezer at home, you are able to stick on Pinterest. I'm not really speaking about a piece of paper stating 'Buy Milk' - more beautiful/interesting/inspiring stuff. If you were getting married and came across a great idea for bouquets you might stick that on the site, or if perhaps you're a fashionista, you may use Pinterest to show a high-heeled shoe you love. Whenever people 'pin' these pictures on Pinterest, other individuals will be able to comment. So when you stick up the wedding flower design you believe will make your eyes look fabulous, your bridesmaids can give their suggestions, as well as suggest alternatives. Ideally, consumers link through their pin to the source, so high heeled shoe ought to link to the company's webpage, or the style blog page you found it on, though not everyone does this. Profiles on Pinterest may be public or private, and individuals can follow other people's boards. All this is visually good, is intuitive to navigate round, and is filled with cool youngsters publishing stuff other fashionable individuals have made. But do you need it? The first thing you'll notice when you visit Pinterest.com is it is visually stunning. The web page has photos of beautiful food, clothes, architecture and everything else that's pleasing to the eye. It's really a very visual social network website, which ought to offer you an idea of what sort of business might benefit from a presence on Pinterest. Aesthetically eye-catching merchandise will work well on Pinterest. If you're in an artistic niche, it's worth investigating promoting your merchandise via the site. Unquestionably anyone who offers a service for the wedding industry needs to look into it - brides looking to plan their special day appear to be big consumers of the service in its early stages. The primary users of Pinterest at the minute are women aged 25-44. If you supply via eBay or Etsy then you definitely ought to be investigating what Pinterest could do for you. Indeed Etsy recently added a 'Pin It' button to their item listings, allowing members to effortlessly share their items in the social network. If however you happen to be an accountant, solicitor or other skilled professional who is offering a specialised service, you probably won't identify much of interest for you professionally. Focus instead on working on your LinkedIn profile. Should you feel Pinterest may be of interest to you, then the next issue is how may you use it to PR your business? Pinterest is a social network site, thus rather than directly marketing your products, the emphasis should be on encouraging visitors to share your items. Direct promoting of your products won't go down well and will not boost your brand. Should you be providing craft items or clothing, it will be straight-forward. Inspire your customers to pin your items via your email list or Facebook account, and think about including follow and 'Pin It' buttons to your results next to your other social networking buttons. You can do this by following the instructions on the Pinterest website. Some other industries will have to be a little more original about promoting their products. Should you operate a cafe or catering service you might share some recipes on Pinterest. Ensure that you've got a good, enticing photograph of the dish, post the recipe on your own website and add a Pin It button. Hopefully customers will pin the shot on the site and others may click through to your website. Don't forget - the key to being successful on Pinterest, and making it to the high traffic homepage, is to always have appealing photos. Make sure that your visuals are first-rate and you will thrive. A possible problem for you is that you are unable to easily join Pinterest at the time of producing this article - it isn't open to the public. The fastest method of getting onto it is to ask a friend who is on the website for an invitation. If not you should ask for an invitation from Pinterest and simply wait patiently by the pc. To conclude, creative people have to have a look at Pinterest. Get an invite today and have a play around to see whether it will work for your enterprise. It's definitely going to grow in popularity within the coming months, so by getting on the website nice and early you might with a little luck manage to steal a march on your competition and grow a presence on the website. LinkedIn Shares Soar in IPO

Shares of LinkedIn soared to more than double their offering price in the company’s IPO on the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday morning.
LinkedIn began trading around 10:00 a.m. ET under the symbol LNKD and quickly surged to above $90 per share. The company had priced its shares at $45 each on Wednesday ahead of the IPO, and the move significantly higher now values the company at more than $8 billion. (Update: As of 10:20 a.m. ET, shares had settled in the $80-$85 range.)
The huge pop also makes founder Reid Hoffman a billionaire — his stake had been valued at $855 million at the original offering price.
LinkedIn’s IPO is viewed by many as a barometer of the public market’s appetite for Internet and social media companies, with the likes of Facebook, Groupon, Pandora and Kayak expected to IPO within the next year. Certainly, today’s huge pop in LinkedIn shares sends a signal that the market is once again hungry (if not starving) for tech.
